Flames are the Emberward run modifier you choose before the first block is placed. They are not cosmetic and they are not a difficulty setting — each flame changes a rule of the game, and the later ones change it in ways that force a different maze.
The flame list
| Flame | Unlock | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Forge Fire | Available from the start | Nothing. The baseline flame — no special abilities |
| Sacred Fire | Clear Misty Forest on Normal or higher | Every adventure stage becomes a Corrupted Stage, and corrupted tiles shift position at the end of each wave |
| Demon Flame | Clear Bone Desert on Normal or higher | Absorbs monster souls to gain damage permanently, but you lose levels and towers when hit |
| Frost Flame | Clear Frost Ruins on Normal or higher | Turns your Ember Spark into an Ice damage source and freezes the map around you |
| Void Flame | Clear Void Depths on Normal or higher | Added with 1.0 along with the fifth region |
| Ancient Flame | Clear Sealed Citadel on Normal or higher | Added with the Sealed Citadel update (v0.4.0) |
| Candle Flame | Clear Sealed Citadel on Heroic | Added with the Sealed Citadel update (v0.4.0) |
Ghost Flame is listed in the game but not yet obtainable — no unlock condition has shipped for it. It is visible in the flame list and it does nothing today, so do not plan runs around it.
What each flame actually does
Forge Fire — the baseline
No abilities. This is the flame to learn the game on, because nothing about it hides the underlying maze decisions.
Sacred Fire — corruption everywhere, all the time
Sacred Fire makes every stage a Corrupted Stage. Corrupted tiles exist on the map and do something bad when a monster walks on them or when your towers sit on them, and with Sacred Fire they shift position randomly at the end of each wave.
That single rule turns the game from static maze design into maintenance: a maze that was correct at wave 3 can be wrong at wave 6 through no decision of yours. The counterplay is structural — leave slack in the maze, keep blocks in reserve, and treat the corruption-cleansing tools (the Purification System on corrupted maps) as mandatory rather than optional.
Demon Flame — a snowball with a real downside
Demon Flame absorbs monster souls to increase its damage permanently. Mechanically: when your Ember Spark kills enough monsters it levels up and gains +1 attack damage, and that damage stays for the rest of the run.
The cost is symmetric. When the flame takes damage from monsters, its level is reduced by 1, and it randomly destroys three of your towers. So a Demon Flame run is a stack you must protect: every hit is both a damage loss and a maze loss, and a bad wave can undo twenty waves of progress. It rewards mazes that kill early and never let anything reach the flame — which is the opposite of the "long corridor with slow effects" default.
Frost Flame — ice, control and free real estate
Frost Flame continuously absorbs heat from its surroundings. Your Ember Spark deals Ice damage and inflicts Chill in a small area, which makes your starting tool a control weapon rather than a damage one.
Its per-wave effect is the interesting part: at the end of each wave the Frost Flame's attack range increases by 2 tiles, and all blocks within that range are frozen. Range growth compounds — by the late waves the flame is covering a large portion of the map, and the freezing gives you a defensive layer that no other flame provides.
Void Flame — the 1.0 flame
Unlocked by clearing the new fifth region (Void Depths) on Normal difficulty or higher. It is tied to the region's void-zone and portal mechanics, and it is used by one of the new achievements: Thinking with Portals requires a Heroic clear of the Chaos Realm using the Void Flame.
Which flame to run
- Learning the game: Forge Fire. No rule changes, no surprises.
- Practicing maze maintenance: Sacred Fire. If you can hold a Sacred Fire maze together, you can hold anything.
- Chasing damage records: Demon Flame, but only with a maze that never lets a monster reach the flame.
- Control and long runs: Frost Flame, whose range growth is the closest thing to a free scaling stat in the game.
- Anything in Void Depths: Void Flame, both for the region's mechanics and for the achievements attached to it.
Flames and talents
Your flame determines what the Ember Spark — the starting unit your talents enhance — is doing all run. The flame-specific talents are the ones that interact with the flame's own mechanic (Demon Flame's soul accumulation, Frost Flame's range growth), so flame choice and talent order are one decision, not two. If you are spending talent points on Frost Flame talents while running Sacred Fire, you are paying for nothing.
