Void Depths is the fifth region and the current end of Emberward's adventure mode. It shipped with 1.0 on September 17, 2026, and the developer's own description of it is blunt: it was harder to build than the previous four regions combined, and it takes the game back to maze building.
What makes it different
Sealed Citadel was designed as the final area before Void Depths existed, and its theme was resource management. Void Depths changes the theme back to routing: blocks alone are not enough. You are expected to use three things together:
- Void zones — map areas consumed by the void that change how you can build.
- Portals — the region's signature mechanic. Monsters travel through them, which means the "longest route" question stops being about walls and starts being about portal order.
- Academy support items — borrowed equipment from the Academy that supplements your defences.
The developer's phrasing — "you may even have to think outside the box to find the longest possible route" — is a warning that the standard corridor-folding advice does not carry over on its own.
The Void Flame
Clearing Void Depths on Normal difficulty or higher unlocks the Void Flame, which ties into the region's mechanics. One of the fifteen new achievements, Thinking with Portals, explicitly requires clearing the Chaos Realm on Heroic using the Void Flame — so the flame is intended to be the region's native tool rather than a reward you collect afterwards.
The four-tier clear ladder
Void Depths is the only region with a fourth achievement tier:
| Achievement | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Void Depths Traveler | Clear on Casual or higher |
| Void Depths Explorer | Clear on Normal or higher |
| Void Depths Pioneer | Clear on Heroic |
| Void Depths Conqueror | Clear on Heroic at Infernal Shard level 24 without using a Special Event Character |
The Conqueror requirement is the hardest single line in the game's achievement list, because it stacks four constraints: Heroic, a specific shard level, no event character, and the region itself.
The endgame gate
1.0 changed what finishing the game means. Special Event Characters and Infernal Shards are unlocked only after completing the entire game — and Void Depths is now the last region. If you had those tools from early access, they are temporarily unavailable until you clear Void Depths on any difficulty.
That makes Void Depths the region every returning player has to clear to get their own toolkit back, regardless of what they cleared before 1.0 shipped.
Region-specific achievements beyond the ladder
| Achievement | What it asks |
|---|---|
| Monster Express | Send more than 10,000 monsters through portals in Void Depths |
| Abyssal Foodie | Enjoy the full Academy meal during a Void Depths adventure |
| Mad Genius | Clear Void Depths on Heroic without using any talents |
| All In | On Heroic, defeat the Void Depths boss before the end of round 8 |
| Thinking with Portals | Clear the Chaos Realm on Heroic with the Void Flame |
Monster Express is the long grind of the set and it accumulates while you farm the region for everything else — do not chase it as a standalone objective.
Practical advice for a first clear
- Do not carry over your Sealed Citadel maze habits. The region's portals and void zones mean the optimal shape is not the optimal corridor; check where a portal can send monsters before committing blocks.
- Bring Academy items into the plan. They are part of the intended solution, not a bonus.
- Expect the region to be harder than its predecessors' Normal. The developer tuned it as the new final area after four regions of player feedback, and the difficulty tiers reflect that.
- Plan your Heroic attempt separately. Mad Genius (no talents) and the Conqueror line are not runs you stumble into while going for the Explorer tier.
Where it sits in progression
Void Depths is region five of five, played after Sealed Citadel. Its clear unlocks the Void Flame (Normal) and restores access to special event characters and Infernal Shards. See the regions overview for the full order and the achievements guide for how its fifteen entries fit into a 100-achievement completion run.
